The black wire goes to the fan too .. but there are two switches that have to be "closed" in order to complete the circuit, ie the the top hopper switch and ash clean out switch. If either are open (not pushed in) ..the circuit won't be closed and fan will never run. Thus if you simply splice out the switches- the fan will run without the switches. To avoid this, there is enough fireblack gasket to use not only on the hopper cover, but under both of the gaskets from Masterbuilt as well. My solution was to check all of the pressure switches, specifically the hopper lid and ash bin. I opened the ash bin door and held the switch all the way in (wearing a heat resistant glove, it was hot), fan kicked on after a few seconds. Closed the door, no fan.
